New single THE ROWAN TREE out now on iTunes

The Rowan Tree - featuring inventive British folk artist Lisa Knapp will be released on November 4th via Filmtrax.
This new arrangement of the timeless traditional Scottish ballad was commissioned for upcoming film LIVING starring Bill Nighy and Aimee Lou Wood. The original folk-song also appears in the film, but for the end credits director Oliver Hermanus approached Lisa directly to record a new version, co-arranged and produced by composer Jim Barne.

The film will also be released on November 4th. After debuting at Sundance earlier this year it was swiftly picked up by Sony Classics, and currently has a 95% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hart of The Wood 25 June

SADLY I WAS NOT ABLE TO ATTEND DUE TO COVID!!!!

I am delighted to announce my participation in this immersive, outdoor project & film. Yours truly features in one of the film installations, my voice is also to be heard on the accompanying recordings instigated by Nathaniel Mann celebrating all things woodland and seasonal, I have taught 3 songs to the Mere Singers, a community choir who will be performing throughout the event (11 - 3.30pm Comer Woods, Dudmaston) and I myself will also be performing during the day. Postponed from 2 years ago it will be great to finally see this magical project happen.

In association with the National Trust film maker, Ben Wigley, has created a multi-layered celebration: ‘Hart of the Wood' is a folkloric, visual journey through Comer Woods, part of Dudmaston's woodland. Through song, film and live performance, the artwork will explore the practices and traditions of woodland workers, as well as the presence of the mystical Green Man. Plus its free.

Opening for Mike Scott & Brother Paul

CANCELLED DUE TO COVID!!!!

I can’t tell you how exciting it was to see that my ‘Till April is Dead’ video was Tweeted by none other than Mike Scott of the Waterboys. It was an unparalleled moment of shere omigodness in so many ways for so many reasons - most of them on Fisherman’s Blues but also from plenty others. Then I can’t tell you how exciting it is that I was asked if I would like to open for two of Mike Scott and Brother Paul’s concerts in the UK in June. ‘Yes’ I said, ‘I would love to’…gulps. If you’re anywhere around Stroud (Sub Rooms) on 16th

Tom Robinson's Birthday Concert at Shepherds bush empire may 2022

Sometimes being a musician is, at times, not easy (you’d never have guessed!) Since the pandemic I admit to feeling more than a bit wierded out about some just ordinary things, there is still a strange atmosphere ‘out there’ at times don’t you think? Perhaps undoing the process of the pandemic, ie, staying in so long, is taking a little time to, well, undo.

Sometimes things come along which make me feel so lucky. Last Friday, 28 May 2022, Gerry & I were asked to join Tom Robinson and his band at Shepherds Bush Empire for his 70th birthday celebration concert, postponed from two years ago because of you know what. Over the years at BBC6 Music Tom Robinson has given so much support to so many new bands and up-coming artists as well as long established independent musicians and self-releasers so it was an absolute pleasure to be asked to join in. We got to play a couple of songs and also to join in on a couple of TRB’s songs (Mighty Sword of Justice and Power In The Darkness) and one of TV Smith’s (The Thin Green Line). I have to admit, until recently I hadn’t really known TV Smith’s work but what a great writer, songsmith and performer he is-proper punk legend. I also got to meet Emily Barker and Lukas Drinkwater whom I’ve seen all over the socialmediasphere for some time so it was fabulous to finally meet and hear them both in real life. Ian McNab played a small solo set too and was brilliant and not forgetting the inimitable Lee Forsyth-Griffiths who plays in the TRB band and is a beautifully soulful singer and songwriter himself.

For all the difficulties in music right now there are some occasions where people are just so kind, generous and well….nice, that one feels such gratitude for music, for those in it who are kind and supportive and for what it can do to spread warmth and power. Thank you, Lisa x

New Song - Cherry Tree Carol

Here is my brand new recording of Cherry Tree Carol and my first release in a while.

This is a traditional Christmas carol that I developed a few years ago and which Gerry and I performed for BBC4’s Christmas Session: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00pcnsp.
What I love about this story is its humanity, that it is both earthly and celestial, supernatural, cosmic and yet human: Joseph with his jealousy, his temper and still-in-the-womb baby Jesus precociously demanding the cherry trees to bend so that his mother, weary from travel and heavily pregnant (in the song though not in the original tale), may quench her thirst.

The story is first found in 9th century apocryphal manuscript, Pseudo Matthew, where Mary asks Joseph to pick her some dates as she is tired. In years of telling the story has been modified and changed. It turns up next in a nativity mystery play in 15th century England, (called the N-Town plays) the fruit changing from Mediterranean dates to the more Northern European cherry.

The actual ballad was first collected in England in the 17th century with the added drama of Mary being pregnant and Jesus commanding the trees from within. This particular text is Appalachian and the music is from a beautiful version of 'Mistress' Health' which I heard Shirley Collins sing.

What I love about the story is its humanity, and that it is both earthly and celestial, magical, supernatural, cosmic and yet human: Joseph with his jealousy, his temper and still-in-the-womb baby Jesus precociously commanding the cherry trees to bend so that his mother, weary from travel and heavily pregnant (in the song though not in the original tale) may quench her thirst. How wonderfully stories mould and change yet something essential has remained here over vast amounts of time.

I hope to put this onto a new solo album in the new year.

New Song 'Sweet Nightingale' recorded for Songs Of England project

I am mighty, mighty humbled and very grateful to have been asked to record the folk song ‘Sweet Nightingale’ for this wonderful brand new project ‘Songs of England’. The charity, English Heritage, and folk singer/song collector Sam Lee & The Nest Collective team have created “a digital collection of 12 traditional folk songs and videos paired to historic sites in the care of the charity from Dover Castle to Hadrian’s Wall.” Featuring some stunning performances as well as beautiful footage I feel very proud to be a part of it. My song has been paired to Tintagel Castle. Woohoo!

St Valentine’s Update - Folk On Foot’s Festival of Love 2021

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I hope this finds you well.

Myself and Gerry are taking part in Folk On Foot’s ‘Festival of LOVE’ 2021 to be broadcast this coming Sunday 14 February. Donations are optional and again 50% of the proceeds will be donated to the hugely important Help Musicians fund which has been crucial over the past few months, particularly as many within the music sector have been completely left out of other government financial schemes over the course of this pandemic.

The long list of performers is inspiring and Gerry & I are proud to be among them. Find out more about the festival here, hope you can tune in…

As much as one can given current circumstances, have a great Valentine’s Day.

All Souls Eve Sunday 1st November solo Sing & Patreon Launch

Hello friends,

IMG_20201030_214222_748.jpg

I’ll be doing a little livestream on evening of Sunday 1st November. An extraordinary assortment of history and lore is imbued in these last autumnal, darkening October days. Hallowe’en, All Souls, All Saints, bonfire night, Samhain… From modern fixations of the macabre via horror fiction and film to deeply pious medieval origins speaking of purgatory, visitation and remembrance alongside witches, magic, ghosts, revenants and all manner of grisly goings on. Like most ‘holi days’ we seem to have long lost many of the old meanings but still hold the rituals and marking of time. As if something in the air calls it. Anyway, in the spirit of this I have been digging out some old songs which touch on such themes and I’ll be having a little sing of them on Sunday night so I hope you can join me. I’ll be solo again but will have my in house tech guru (Gerry Diver) on hand to mix the sound nicely.

I’ll broadcast from my Lisa Knapp Music facebook account here. www.facebook.com/shesingsongs. Also, as I mentioned before I have been getting my Patreon page ready and will be launching it (hopefully!) the same night, seems an auspicious night to do so. I hope the spirits and souls will conjure a sympathetic atmosphere. ..x

New Gig - March 16 - King's Place

Lisa will be performing alongside Irish Folk luminaries Mary MacPartlan, Rionach Connolly and fiddle player/multi-instrumentalist Gerry Diver on March 16 at King’s Place for an extraordinary play-with-music retelling of the story of Irish street singing legend Margaret Barry in She Moved Through the Fair by Colin Irwin.

Norma Waterson likened her to Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Edith Piaf; Bob Dylan said she was his favourite folk singer; and Van Morrison called her ‘a real soul singer’…Margaret Barry was extraordinary….

Lisa featured on NEW MIXTAPE by Stick In The Wheel

Don’t You Go A Rushing is a song from Lisa’s latest album Till April Is Dead. This live version was recorded at Stick In The Wheels’ previous album launch and has been set about in the cutting room by SITWs very own EAN KRAYTER (Ian Carter). Snipped, chopped and throughly shot through with electronic, dub and dance overtones its come out the other end an expressionist wonder! We love it here! Read more…
